SAFETY GUIDELINES FOR EDUCATION OUTDOORS & RATIOS
Eco-Logic activities conform with the Department of Education
& Early Childhood Development’s Safety Guidelines for
Education Outdoors 2008, as well as the Adventure Activity Standards
2006 (AAS) developed by the Outdoor Recreation Centre and Victorian
Government.
As advised by the Department of Education & Early Childhood
Development and the AAS, Eco-Logic applies the following Eco-Logic
staff : student/ client ratios
- General beach and land-based activities, 1: 25
(eg Estuary Discovery, Rockpool Ramble, Junior Ranger activities)
- Canoe Discovery Paddle, 1:12
- Ocean Snorkelling, 1: 8-10
- Bushwalking on formed tracks for up to 5 hours, 1: 20
In addition to our staff, we expect a teacher/ leader to be present
with each group of up to 25 students (or 11 students for Canoeing)
during our activities.
ECO-LOGIC STAFF QUALIFICATIONS
All staff:
Canoeing and Snorkelling Instructors:
- Canoeing Victoria
- Australian Underwater Federation (AUF), National Association
of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) or PADI or experience.
- Minimum Community Surf Bronze Medallion (Snokelling)
Environmental Projects staff:
- Occupational Health & Safety
Tour Guides at Split Point Lighthouse (managed by Eco-Logic):

CURRICULUM
Eco-Logic’s environmental education programs offer opportunities
for hands on, student-centred learning whilst encouraging a stronger
sense of stewardship and responsibility for the preservation of our
natural environment.
Eco-Logic aims to accommodate individual school’s needs,
and our staff incorporate creative teaching styles that place an
emphasis on personal engagement and enjoyment.
Eco-Logic’s activities:
• Cater for individual schools needs
• Provide valuable learning opportunities for students from
primary school to VCE
• Support Key Learning Areas (KLAs) such as Civics and Citizenship,
The Humanities– Geography and History, The Arts, English,
Health and Physical Education, Maths and Sciences
• Can be used to support the Discovering Democracy projects
and Values Education projects
• Provide opportunities for student-centred activities, first-hand
observations, experiential learning, investigations, data collection
and discussions
• Have been developed with an understanding of KLA concepts
K-12 by specialist teachers at Eco-Logic.

SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
We understand that your school principal & council may require
evidence of our safety procedures, documentation and staff qualifications.

• Evidence of Eco-Logic’s current Public Liability Insurance
• Evidence of staff’s ‘Working With Children Checks’

PREPARING YOUR GROUP
As we operate our activities outdoors, we require staff and students
to be well prepared for a range of weather conditions.
General clothing requirements include:
• sunhat
• sunsmart clothing (ie. not singlets) in summer/warm weather
• warm jumper
• waterproof jacket
• beanie (winter)
• water bottle
• appropriate footwear
- Rockpool Rambles Canoeing & Estuary Discovery activites:
shoes to get wet (eg old runners, Crocs, wetsuit/reef booties-
not thongs) without approprite footwear, maybe denied participation
- Junior Ranger & Creatures of the Night activities: comfortable,
closed footwear (not thongs)
- FREE Environmental Projects & Dune EduAction: closed footwear
(not thongs)
- Lighthouse Tours: comfortable footwear, no thongs
In extreme weather conditions, we can modify your program to follow
the same themes. We will negotiate any changes prior to your activity
as necessary.
Pre & Post Activity Packs
Pre & Post Activity Packs are available to primary school groups
who join our Estuary Discovery, Rockpool Ramble, Junior Ranger and
Lighthouse activities.
These packs provide an introduction and then follow-up to our activities,
and include some ideas to use in the classroom or camp.
We will email these resources along with your paperwork when you
make a booking with us.

Our expectations of visiting teachers/ leaders are consistent with

Safety Guidelines for Education Outdoors 2008, as well as the Adventure
Activity Standards 2006 (AAS) developed by the Outdoor Recreation
Centre and Victorian Government.
Our general expectations:
Planning activities
• When booking an activity with Eco-Logic we will discuss
your educational aims, participant’s clothing requirements,
and ask you to provide medical information that may affect our activities
On-site/ during activities
• We expect teachers/ leaders to prepare students for the
activity, and ensure that they are dressed appropriately for the
activity and weather conditions
• We expect a teacher/ leader to be present with each group
of participants to support our staff in the discipline of participants

Roles and Responsibilities of Your Staff
• To appropriately prepare participants for outdoor activities
and weather conditions
• To provide one staff member/ adult leader (min 18 years
of age) per group of 25 students during activities
• To provide primary discipline to participants and aid Eco-Logic
staff with group management
• To have full medical details for all participants on site
during the activity
• To provide a first aid kit and take primary responsibility
for first aid during sessions, & have a mobile phone
• To take responsibility for non participants

Eco-Logic operates it’s business within the Department of

• are appropriately qualified and/ or experienced in the
activity that they are leading
• conform to the required staff: client ratios
• carry a mobile phone and first aid kit for all activities
• demonstrate good sunsmart practices
• provide appropriate safety briefings prior to each activity
• will not discriminate against any client, and will encourage
participation from everyone
• use equipment that is safe and well maintained
• are courteous of other users at our activity sites
• demonstrate best environmental practice, including minimum
impact on the environment
Roles and Responsibilities of Eco-Logic Education &
Environment Services
• To instruct all activities with the highest level of safety,
skill, care and respect
• To provide appropriate equipment in good working condition
• To ensure that staff have current qualifications in First
Aid, CPR, Working with Children & others as relevant
• To accommodate participants with all medical conditions
and disabilities, as possible/ appropriate
